# Notes Editor

The notes editor is where research becomes usable writing. It combines a rich text editor with citations, reminders, source import, AI assistance, and export options.

## Writing and formatting

The editor supports common drafting tools:

* headings, paragraphs, lists, and task lists
* bold, italic, underline, highlights, and alignment
* links and images
* tables
* inline math and LaTeX blocks
* page breaks

The toolbar can be shown or hidden while you write.

## Saving

Notes auto-save while you work. The editor also exposes a manual save action from the note menu. New notes are created inside the current collection.

## Due dates

Use **Add due date** near the top of a note to keep follow-up work visible. You can choose a date from the calendar or use quick options such as today, tomorrow, next week, or two weeks out. A short reminder note can be added with the due date.

## Research and AI sidebars

The note editor has two separate sidebars:

* **Research:** Manage citations, inspect citation context, insert citations, and insert figures.
* **AI Assistant:** Ask follow-up questions while keeping the note open.

You can branch out from selected text when you want to explore a passage without losing your draft.

## Importing source material

Use the note menu to import a collection source into the current note. Supported source types include DOCX, TEX, and ZIP sources. You can:

* **Replace** the current note with imported content.
* **Append** imported content to the end of the note.

From a collection, you can also create a new note directly from an importable source.

## Citations

Use citations when a note depends on a source. Inline citations are clickable, and the citation footer keeps references visible near the bottom of the note. Citation style can be changed from the citation workflow.

## Exports

The note menu includes export actions for:

* PDF
* Word `.docx`
* LaTeX

<Note>
  Treat exports as final-pass artifacts. Review formatting, citations, math,
  and generated figures before sharing outside Oystack.
