Paper Reader

The paper reader is the focused reading surface for PDFs and supported documents. It keeps the source visible while research tools stay nearby.

Opening a source

You can open a readable source from:
  • the dashboard after upload
  • a collection resource
  • recent work
  • a source reference from chat or research output
When a collection resource already has an analysis conversation, Oystack can reopen that existing reader context instead of starting over.

Reader sidebar

The reader sidebar includes tabs for:
  • Details: Paper metadata, citation counts, identifiers, availability, and classification when available.
  • Highlights: Important passages or saved reading context.
  • Related: Related papers, references, citations, and matching documents from your library.
  • Infographics: Figure generation for the open paper.
The Related tab can show academic metadata such as citations, references, and recommended papers. It can also surface matching items from your own library when there is enough local context. Some related papers can be added to the Hub when a DOI is available.

Highlights and branchout

When highlights are available, you can use them as anchors for follow-up work. Branchout conversations let you explore a selected passage while keeping the main reading flow intact.

Infographics

The Infographics tab lets you generate figures from:
  • paper methods
  • custom supporting text
You can describe the visual intent, choose an aspect ratio, request multiple variations, and select the version you want to keep.

Review guidance

  • Confirm metadata before citing a paper.
  • Open DOI or Semantic Scholar links when you need external validation.
  • Review generated figures against the paper before using them.
  • Treat unavailable reader actions as a sign that the file type or processing state may not be ready yet.
